Rhapsody in Blue

from £3,800.00

I don’t know about you, but I’m strangely drawn to the sea.

Living not far from the Pembrokeshire coast in Wales, I’m constantly drawn to its ever-changing theatre. My wife and I try to get “over West” as often as we can, letting the moods of the coastline set the pace.

On one visit, standing on the shore, we watched waves collide and fold back on themselves, stirring up a vivid clash of colour - deep, shifting blues fractured by white foam and flashes of bright-red dulse seaweed, thrown into motion by the tide. It was a fleeting moment of wild beauty, but it stayed with me.

That moment became the spark for ‘Rhapsody in Blue’.

This painting is a celebration of movement. Sweeps of blue surge and overlap like currents crossing beneath the surface, while bursts of red cut through the composition, echoing seaweed caught and released by the swell. Whites scatter and splinter like spray, and darker, inky passages add depth - the unseen weight beneath the water.

The surface is layered and physical, built through instinct and response rather than planning, mirroring the sea’s refusal to behave or repeat itself.

On the wall, ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ brings energy into a space without chaos. From a distance it feels expansive and immersive, almost panoramic; up close, the texture and detail reveal themselves slowly, rewarding time and attention.

Collectors often describe works like this as changing the emotional temperature of a room - adding movement, light, and a sense of freedom, as if the walls themselves have begun to breathe.

Perfect as a statement piece for open, airy interiors - coastal homes, modern living spaces, or anywhere that benefits from life and flow - the palette sings against neutral surroundings. Whites, greys, stone, and warm woods give the blues and reds room to move, turning the painting into a window that opens straight out to sea.

The Presence of Scale

At scale, ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ becomes something you experience physically as much as visually. Its size allows the movement to unfold fully - sweeping, immersive, and impossible to take in all at once. From across the room it commands attention, anchoring the space with confidence; up close, it draws you into the surface, where layers, splashes, and subtle shifts in colour reveal themselves slowly.

This sense of presence mirrors the sea itself - expansive, enveloping, and quietly powerful - turning the painting into a focal point that shapes the atmosphere of the entire room.

‘A painting that doesn’t just depict the sea — it lets it in’.
