Soothe A Space
Just half an hour’s drive from my home in Wales lies Cardiff - the City of Arcades.
These ornate Victorian passageways are worlds unto themselves - enclosed spaces where light softens, footsteps echo, and time seems to move differently. My wife Amanda and I return to them often, wandering without hurry, absorbing the layers of texture, colour, and atmosphere that make each arcade feel intimate and self-contained.
One of my wife’s favourite places within those arcades is a small crystal shop, glowing quietly with shelves of quartz, amethyst, and agate. Each stone carries the visual evidence of pressure and patience - formed over immense stretches of time, shaped by forces that cannot be rushed. She has always been drawn to agate, known for its grounding, soothing qualities and its intricate bands of colour. On one visit, a particular piece stopped us both: warm earthen browns intertwined with cool teal blues, flowing through translucent stone like frozen movement. We brought it home, and that crystal became the emotional and visual seed of ‘Soothe A Space’.
Back in the studio, I wanted to translate that sense of natural equilibrium into paint.
This work wasn’t rushed. Layers were built slowly, allowing colours to merge, separate, and resurface - much like sediment settling and shifting in water. Earthy browns anchor the composition, teals introduce calm and depth, and creamy whites soften transitions, creating breathing space within the surface. Some passages dried matte and absorbent; others retained a subtle sheen, catching light the way mineral veins do when turned in the hand.
Every mark is a record of movement, decision, and restraint.
The Sensory Experience
There’s a tactile richness to ‘Soothe A Space’ that reveals itself over time. From a distance, the painting reads as cohesive and calming - balanced, grounded, and composed. Step closer, and complexity emerges: soft eddies of colour, layered textures, and gentle transitions that draw the eye inward rather than pushing it away.
Light interacts differently throughout the day. Morning light lifts the cooler tones, enhancing clarity and freshness. In the evening, warmer hues deepen, creating a more intimate, enveloping presence. The painting never feels static; it subtly responds to its environment, much like the natural materials that inspired it.
Living With the Piece
Displayed in a home, ‘Soothe A Space’ becomes more than a visual focal point - it becomes atmosphere. Collectors often speak about works like this in terms of how they feel rather than how they look. The piece has a calming influence on a room, gently lowering its emotional temperature without draining warmth or character.
In a modern living space, it introduces balance and quiet confidence. In a minimalist interior, it acts as an anchor - adding depth, texture, and soul without clutter. It’s particularly suited to spaces where you want to think clearly, unwind fully, or feel grounded at the end of a long day. This is a painting designed not to compete with a room, but to harmonise with it.
The Presence of Scale
This is a large-scale work, designed to be experienced rather than glanced at. Its size allows the colours to breathe, the textures to unfold, and the energy to move across the surface without compression. In person, it holds a wall with quiet authority - felt before it’s fully understood.
Collectors often underestimate scale until they stand in front of the piece. The painting doesn’t just occupy space; it defines it, creating a sense of calm and cohesion that smaller works simply can’t achieve.
