Fracture
Do you ever find yourself drawn back to the same landscape, again and again?
Less than a two hour drive from us is the Pembrokeshire coast and my wife and I visit as often as we can.
Pembrokeshire and it’s majestic coastline is a place that never disappoints. The cliffs, shaped by time and tide, reveal layers of sedimentary rock fractured by weather, water, and movement - records of forces working patiently over thousands of years.
Standing along the coast, you begin to notice how nothing is truly solid. Rock splits, shifts, and reforms. Lines appear where pressure has built and released. That sense of slow tension giving way is what led to ‘Fracture’.
Rather than depicting the coastline directly, the painting distils the experience of being there - the movement of water, the weight of stone, and the moments where surfaces give way.
The surface was built through layered gestures, dragging and breaking paint across the canvas. Blacks and greys form a dense, grounding base, while whites tear through like exposed stone faces catching light.
Using ‘abstract’ license, streaks of blue, obviously not found in nature in these rocks, was added, which move diagonally across the surface, echoing water cutting through rock, adding rhythm and direction. Texture plays a central role here - thick passages sit beside scraped areas, creating a tactile record of pressure and release.
On the wall, Fracture brings a sense of momentum and depth. It feels powerful without being heavy, energetic without noise. From across the room, the diagonal movement pulls the eye through the piece; up close, the layered textures slow you down, inviting closer inspection.
Collectors often describe living with works like this as grounding. It introduces a quiet strength into a space - something steady and elemental that balances modern interiors beautifully, whether against clean walls or more textured surroundings.
