Cascade
I don’t know about you, but I find, you just can’t beat a good walk. Living close to the Brecon Beacons National Park in South Wales, we’re lucky to have access to some of the most quietly powerful landscapes in the UK. One walk my wife and I return to often leads to Henrhyd Falls - the tallest waterfall in South Wales, where you can sometimes step behind the curtain of water and feel the full force of it moving past you.
The water is constant, but the experience never is. Light shifts. Spray hangs in the air. Sound deepens and rebounds. Shadows slide across rock and moss, changing the mood from moment to moment.
Standing near the falls, form begins to dissolve into rhythm. You notice the force of the drop, the scatter of water as it hits stone, the way moss, rock, and air seem to hold the memory of movement. That sensation of power breaking apart and reforming endlessly, it is this that sits at the heart of this artwork.
The inspiration for ‘Cascade’ came later, looking back through photographs taken after one of those walks. I was struck by how the cascading water interacted with the moss-covered rock beneath it - how energy and surface played off one another. Influenced by the physical freedom of Jackson Pollock, the painting was built through movement and layering rather than pre-drawn structure. Deep blues and blacks create a grounded, immersive base, while flashes of green and white cut across the surface like water catching light mid-fall.
On the wall, the piece brings a sense of flow into a room. It’s energising without being loud, immersive without overwhelming. From a distance it feels expansive and calm; up close, the surface reveals layers of movement that keep the eye travelling.
Collectors often say works like this subtly change how a space feels - more open, more alive. It becomes something you return to at different times of day, noticing how light plays across the texture, much like water revealing new details as it moves.
