‘Perple Haze’emerged through experimentation rather than planning. I was exploring the use of masking tape - not as a tool for precision, but as a way to introduce temporary order that could later be disrupted. Clean geometric boundaries were laid down, then challenged by movement, splatter, and instinctive mark-making.
As layers built, the painting became a conversation between structure and flow. Paint was allowed to move freely across taped edges, the tape removed once I was happy the composition had found its balance, leaving behind geometry that feels discovered rather than imposed.
In the bottom-right corner, a small white square anchors the composition. It’s made from crushed eggshells mixed directly into white paint - an intentional contrast to the surrounding energy. Fragile material turned structural. Texture replacing colour. It acts as a pause in the painting, a quiet moment of physical presence acting as a surprise when viewed closely.
On the wall, this piece sharpens a room without overwhelming it. The geometry gives it clarity and confidence; the expressive marks keep it alive and unpredictable. Light catches the textured, square-shaped eggshell element throughout the day with subtle shadows moving across it’s rough surface.
