Crush

from £3,800.00

Ok, please forgive me as we go off the wall a little…

Let me ask you a question…

How many elephants can you fit in a Mini?

The stock answer to this riddle is: four - two in the front and two in the back.

Right?

Wrong!

Not in this case 😞

My ‘grand-scale’ surrealist take on that classic riddle shows just one enormous elephant, perched smugly atop a pancaked, light-blue vintage Mini. The car lies crushed beneath its weight, the number plate ‘CRU 541T’ lying on the ground - do you get it?

The title Crush seemed the only fitting name.

“But why the giraffe?... I hear you ask!”

Well, for those familiar with the elephant and mini riddle, the follow-up to that is...

‘How many giraffes can you fit in a mini?'

To which the normal response is 'none', because the mini is full of elephants!

But here, with the Mini out of commission, the giraffe strides off. stage right in protest. Only its hindquarters remain in view, exiting the scene with all the dignity it can muster.

The style of this artwork is unashamedly Dali-esque and I make no apologies for this. Surrealism felt like the perfect language for the absurdity of the subject. it just seemed an appropriate style to paint this artwork in.

The warm-toned desert landscape - sun-baked yellows, ochres, and oranges fading into a deep blue sky - becomes the stage for this improbable encounter.

It’s whimsical. It’s absurd. It’s a story told in paint. And above all, it’s meant to make you smile. I had enormous fun painting Crush, and I hope it brings you the same joy as the viewer.

I hope it brings a smile to your face and you have as much fun with it as I had painting it!

One elephant, one Mini, one surreal scene.”
