'Soothe a Space #03’ is a contemporary abstract, giclée print, based on one of my originals.
The city of Cardiff is about a half-hour journey from where we live and is known as the "City of Arcades" due to the highest concentration of Victorian, Edwardian and contemporary indoor shopping arcades in any British city.
On the occasional shopping trips my wife enjoys in Cardiff, I sometimes accompany her as we both love wandering through these aforementioned arcades. They are full of interesting, eclectic shops that you just don't see anywhere else.
My wife is in to crystals, so one of the shops she loves visiting is a crystal shop in one of these arcades. She is particularly drawn to agate, a common semiprecious silica mineral, that occurs in bands of varying colour and transparency. It is also said to have soothing and calming properties that heals inner anger and anxiety.
Looking at the large agate crystals that were on display in this shop I was struck by natures sheer beauty and was particularly drawn to a brown and green example and so we bought it.
So this is where inspiration came from, and why the original artwork was titled, 'Soothe A Space'.
The painting is a dynamic blend of various browns, dark blue-black, cream, teal/turquoise and white, with layered and blended colours forming flowing, organic shapes. The application of paint is spontaneous, featuring splashes, drips, and uneven texture.
Some areas are matte, while others have a slight sheen. The overall effect conveys raw energy, depth, and complexity, evoking a natural or geological theme through the varied colours and textures.
