This painting was inspired in part by the rhythm and structure of jazz, particularly Dave Brubeck’s Take Five. There’s something about the balance between order and improvisation in that piece of music that stayed with me and gradually found its way into the way this painting developed.
Rather than trying to paint music literally, the composition became more about rhythm felt visually. Circular forms act almost like beats or pulses across the surface, while repeated marks and grids introduce a sense of tempo and movement.
Sweeping gestures interrupt that structure just enough to stop the piece feeling rigid or overly controlled. Some areas feel active and energetic, others quieter and more restrained, allowing the eye to move naturally around the painting over time.
From a distance, it feels bold and balanced. Up close, smaller relationships between shapes, marks and textures begin to reveal themselves more gradually.
On the wall, it brings movement, rhythm and quiet energy into a space without overwhelming it.
