This painting was inspired by the atmosphere surrounding Up Helly Aa - the Scottish fire festival centred around the ceremonial burning of a Viking longship. More than the spectacle itself, it was the sense of ritual, fire and memory that stayed with me.
Rather than depicting the event literally, the piece became a response to the movement of light through darkness and the feeling of energy rising and fading away again.
Earthy browns and glowing ochres create warmth throughout the surface, while lighter marks cut through like sparks drifting upward from the fire. Some areas feel dense and grounded, others softer and more open, creating a balance between movement and stillness.
From a distance, the composition feels atmospheric and calm. Up close, textures and layered details begin to emerge more gradually, revealing subtle shifts in colour and surface over time.
On the wall, it brings warmth, depth and quiet presence into a space without overwhelming it.
“Fire, memory, and the echo of ritual.”
