When I paint realism, I’ll often use a grid.

It’s just an artist’s tool really, something that sits quietly underneath everything, helping proportions fall into place. It’s never meant to be seen. Once the painting takes over, the grid disappears and does its job unnoticed.

But with this piece, I started to question that.

What happens if you don’t remove it? What if the grid isn’t hidden… what if it is the painting?

Instead of something precise or mathematical, the grid here became more of a loose framework, something to respond to rather than follow. It gave the painting a structure, but not a rigid one.

The surface was built up slowly. Warm ochres, rusts and ambers came first, then cooler blues and pale turquoise began to interrupt and soften things. Some lines were dragged through, others broken or allowed to fade. A few areas were reinforced, but plenty were left unresolved.

It’s not about accuracy - it’s about balance.

There’s a sense that the painting has been worked, adjusted, reconsidered. You can see traces of what came before — marks that haven’t been completely covered, layers that still show through. Nothing feels overly corrected, and that’s intentional.

Light plays its part as well.

Certain areas catch it more than others, pulling forward slightly, while softer passages fall back. That unevenness keeps the surface active without it ever feeling busy.

From a distance, the grid gives a sense of order. Something stable.

Step closer, and it loosens. You start to notice the warmth in the colour, the interruptions, the small tensions between areas that don’t quite align perfectly.

That contrast is what gives it life.

In a space, it tends to ground things without feeling heavy. There’s structure there, but it doesn’t impose itself. It sits comfortably, adding a sense of quiet rhythm rather than demanding attention.

Over time, it becomes less about the grid itself and more about the feeling it creates.
