This one takes me right back to the beginning.

Long before I found my own direction, I was drawn to artists who worked with instinct rather than control, and Jackson Pollock was right at the centre of that. There was something about the freedom in his work that stuck with me early on. No rigid plan, no overthinking… just movement, energy, and trust in the process.

That idea never really left.

This piece came from revisiting that mindset. Letting go a bit. Working more physically, more directly, allowing the painting to build itself through action rather than careful placement.

The title Something Fishy’ is just my sense of humour, my nod to that influence… a quiet joke, really. For those that don’t know what a pollock is… it’s a North Atlantic fish.

But the process itself was anything but light.

The surface developed through layers of movement, paint thrown and allowed to fall naturally across the canvas. Lines cross over one another, intersect, break apart, then reconnect somewhere else. There’s no single focal point, no obvious hierarchy. Everything happens at once.

That’s intentional.

The palette carries a weight to it. Smoke-heavy blue-greys form the ground, with coal-black lines cutting through and sharp whites splintering across the surface like sparks. Then those reds push forward, energetic, slightly aggressive - bringing heat into what might otherwise feel controlled.

It’s a constant push and pull.

Stand close, and it feels raw. Physical. You can almost trace the movement that created it. Step back, and something else happens - the chaos begins to settle. The layers start to organise themselves visually, and a kind of balance emerges from what initially feels unpredictable.

It finds its own structure.

That’s always been the fascination for me, how something instinctive can still arrive at a point of cohesion without being forced there.

On the wall, it doesn’t sit quietly.

It holds energy. It changes depending on the light, the distance, even your mood when you look at it. There’s always something happening within it, but it never feels overwhelming, just alive.

And that’s really what ties it back to that early influence.

Not imitation, but understanding.

Letting the painting breathe on its own terms — and trusting that somewhere within the chaos, something meaningful will take shape.

‘Where instinct takes over, and chaos finds its rhythm’.
