Soothe A Space
Inspired by the quiet intimacy of Cardiff’s Victorian arcades and the layered beauty of agate stone, this work translates natural equilibrium into paint. Earthy browns and cool teals move in slow, deliberate layers - built with patience, shaped by restraint, and designed to bring calm presence to a space. In person, its scale and shifting light create an atmosphere that feels grounded, balanced, and quietly powerful.

Which camp are you in?
Bear with me here…
Do you love Marmite or do you hate it?
I’m firmly in the ‘love it’ camp - especially on cheese, in a sandwich... mmm, yummy!😀
The exact same question can be applied to ‘maths’. This time I’m in the other camp - I hate it!
Maths lessons at school were never exactly my favourite place to be. Who wants to know about two trains leaving different stations anyway - numbers never really spoke my language.
I did like geometry though!
There was something satisfying about the clarity of circles and squares - shapes that felt simple on the surface yet endlessly capable of variation. I suppose they appealed to my artistic side even then.
That fascination has followed me into my painting. You’ll notice that many of my works contain echoes of those same geometric forms.
In ‘Off On A Tangent’, I let myself play freely with them - circles expanding, squares nesting within each other, and lines drifting between order and instinct. What begins as structure gradually loosens into something more expressive.
Look closely and the surface reveals layers of soft turquoise, glowing amber, and deep rust tones that seem to hover and merge across the canvas. Rounded forms feel almost like lenses or portals, while the angular shapes create pathways that guide the eye deeper into the composition. The paint drips and subtle textures add a sense of gravity and movement, as though the geometry itself has begun to breathe.
When this piece hangs in a room, it brings a quiet sense of balance. The structured forms create visual stability, while the colours and flowing textures add warmth and energy. It’s the kind of painting that slowly reveals itself over time - the more you live with it, the more relationships between shapes and colours begin to emerge.
There’s a quiet satisfaction in discovering harmony where structure and intuition collide, and that’s exactly where this painting lives.
‘Proof that even if maths wasn’t your favourite subject, geometry can still create something beautiful… and yummy!🙂’

This one takes me right back to the beginning.
Long before I found my own direction, I was drawn to artists who worked with instinct rather than control, and Jackson Pollock was right at the centre of that. There was something about the freedom in his work that stuck with me early on. No rigid plan, no overthinking… just movement, energy, and trust in the process.
That idea never really left.
This piece came from revisiting that mindset. Letting go a bit. Working more physically, more directly, allowing the painting to build itself through action rather than careful placement.
The title ‘Something Fishy’ is just my sense of humour, my nod to that influence… a quiet joke, really. For those that don’t know what a pollock is… it’s a North Atlantic fish.
But the process itself was anything but light.
The surface developed through layers of movement, paint thrown and allowed to fall naturally across the canvas. Lines cross over one another, intersect, break apart, then reconnect somewhere else. There’s no single focal point, no obvious hierarchy. Everything happens at once.
That’s intentional.
The palette carries a weight to it. Smoke-heavy blue-greys form the ground, with coal-black lines cutting through and sharp whites splintering across the surface like sparks. Then those reds push forward, energetic, slightly aggressive - bringing heat into what might otherwise feel controlled.
It’s a constant push and pull.
Stand close, and it feels raw. Physical. You can almost trace the movement that created it. Step back, and something else happens - the chaos begins to settle. The layers start to organise themselves visually, and a kind of balance emerges from what initially feels unpredictable.
It finds its own structure.
That’s always been the fascination for me, how something instinctive can still arrive at a point of cohesion without being forced there.
On the wall, it doesn’t sit quietly.
It holds energy. It changes depending on the light, the distance, even your mood when you look at it. There’s always something happening within it, but it never feels overwhelming, just alive.
And that’s really what ties it back to that early influence.
Not imitation, but understanding.
Letting the painting breathe on its own terms — and trusting that somewhere within the chaos, something meaningful will take shape.
‘Where instinct takes over, and chaos finds its rhythm’.

Some places never really leave us, don’t you agree?
The shapes, the colours, the architecture from our past. We move on, but parts of it stay subconsciously with us, always sitting quietly in the background.
I grew up in the South Wales valleys, surrounded by industry, miners terraced houses clinging to hillsides, bridges and viaducts cutting across space, heavy concrete and steel everywhere.
At the time it just felt normal moving through this landscape, but looking back there was a strong sense of structure running through everything. That’s the part that stayed with me.
I found myself drawn to the repetition of it all, the lines, the blocks, the way things connected and held together. Even the contrast had a kind of balance to it. Rust against dark surfaces, hard edges beside worn textures. It wasn’t polished, but it wasn’t random either, and there was something in that which stuck.
‘Urban Echoes’ comes from those impressions, but not in a literal sense. It’s more about reducing those memories down to form and balance, letting the structure come through without trying to recreate a specific place. The terracotta tones hint at weathered metal and brick, while the darker areas hold everything in place and give it weight.
There’s a framework running through it, but it isn’t rigid. Some elements repeat, others interrupt, and that slight tension between order and disruption is what keeps it interesting. It’s controlled, but not overly precise, and you can still sense where things have been adjusted or left slightly unresolved.
In a space it tends to settle in rather than take over. It brings a sense of structure and quiet presence, something that anchors the room without making it feel heavy. The longer you live with it, the more it gives back.
It’s really just a reflection of those early surroundings, simplified but still carrying their weight, the kind of influence that doesn’t disappear, it just becomes part of how you see things… and who you are!

Some paintings start with a clear idea. This one didn’t.
It began as an experiment, circles, squares, just seeing what would happen if I let things develop without trying to steer them too much. No plan, no end point, just responding to whatever was already on the surface and letting it build from there.
That’s how it carried on.
Each mark led to the next, layers building up without any real intention behind them other than to keep the momentum going. It stayed in that space for a while, purely abstract, nothing trying to represent anything in particular - then something shifted.
Once it was finished and I stepped back, I started to see something in it that hadn’t been there before, or at least hadn’t been obvious. A wheelbarrow shape began to emerge out of the forms. Not clearly defined, but enough to recognise once you saw it.
After that, you couldn’t really unsee it - well I couldn’t!
That moment (after a bit of playing about with the title) gave it its name. What started as pure abstraction picked up a kind of quiet reference to something real, almost as if the painting had been heading there on its own.
The colour plays into that sense of weight and movement. The reds push forward, giving it warmth and energy, while the greys and whites hold things back, creating space and structure.
Some areas feel solid and grounded, others more loose and gestural, and that mix keeps it from settling into one thing. The circles and geometric shapes give it a framework, but the marks across them break that order just enough to keep it alive.
From a distance, it reads as bold and graphic. As you get closer, it becomes more layered, different elements starting to connect, shift, and suggest something just beyond the surface.
In a space, it brings that same balance with it. It has presence, but it doesn’t dominate. It gives the eye something to work through, something that changes slightly the longer you spend with it.
And that’s really where it lands.
An abstract piece that found its own way into something familiar, without ever fully letting go of where it started.
