I’ve always been fascinated by rainbows, I don’t know about you!

Not just how they look, but how they happen. That moment when sunlight hits water in just the right way and suddenly colour appears where there wasn’t any a second before - it’s all about refraction!

That idea of water droplets having the ability to bend light is what led this piece. But I felt that the piece would only work if the droplet felt oversized - almost exaggerated - so the shapes beneath it have room to bend, distort, and shift to emulate the refraction phenomenon.

From across the room, it feels bold and fairly structured at first. Strong colour, clear shapes, something you can take in quickly. But the longer you stay with it, the more that clarity softens. You start to notice where things aren’t quite fixed, where drips interrupt, where colours overlap in ways that keep changing the longer you look.

The yellows carry that sense of light breaking through, almost like a glow sitting just beneath the surface, while the blues and purples give it depth so it doesn’t feel flat. Then the reds come in and lift it again, adding a bit of energy that moves your eye around the canvas without forcing it anywhere.

Those circular forms hint at droplets, but not in an obvious way. More like small points where everything bends slightly, like you’re catching a glimpse of something mid-change.

And that’s really how it behaves in a space.

It doesn’t just sit there as a fixed image. There’s a subtle shift to it depending on the light, the angle, even how long you spend with it. In a simpler room it naturally becomes a focal point, but it doesn’t feel heavy. In a more layered space it adds brightness and movement without competing.

It just keeps giving you something back the longer you look.
