Some places can capture your imagination without you ever having been there.
When my daughter visited Iceland, she returned with photographs of its extraordinary volcanic landscape. I remember being struck by the colours, the dramatic contrasts and the sheer rawness of the scenery.
There was something fascinating about seeing a landscape shaped by such powerful natural forces. Dark, almost black surfaces, earthy mineral tones and flashes of brightness — all suggesting a world that was constantly changing.
Looking at Molten, I'm reminded of those photographs.
The sweeping white marks suggest flashes of movement and energy, while the darker, earthier tones bring a sense of weight and stability. There's a contrast between the two — something powerful and unpredictable set against something more grounded.
The painting developed through a process of layering, allowing colours and marks to interact, sometimes taking unexpected directions.
Areas of paint appear to flow into one another, while others seem to have settled naturally into place. The result is a composition that feels energetic without becoming chaotic.
There's a sense of movement, but also balance.
