This one really comes from that feeling you get when you look up at the night sky.
You know the one, that pause, where everything feels bigger than you expected, and you’re not quite sure where it ends. I’ve always been drawn to that. Not just the scale of it, but the sense that there’s something going on far beyond what you can see.
That’s where this piece began.
There’s also a bit of nostalgia tied into it. I’ve been a Star Wars fan for as long as I can remember, and that opening sequence -“A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…” - always had a way of pulling you straight into something vast and unknown. It’s less about the film itself and more about what that line represents. Possibility, scale, a sense of stepping into something bigger.
I wanted to capture that feeling rather than anything literal.
The painting developed through movement and colour rather than a fixed idea. The deeper blues and teals stretch across the surface like open space, while those warmer bursts, oranges, reds, touches of yellow, cut through and disrupt it slightly, suggesting energy moving through something otherwise calm.
There’s a bit of tension in that contrast, but it holds together.
As it built up, I left a lot of the surface visible, splashes, softer drifts, small granular textures that sit within the layers rather than being covered. Those details don’t jump out straight away, but they’re there if you spend a bit more time with it, and they start to shift how you read the piece.
From a distance, it feels quite expansive. Something that opens the space up a bit.
As you move closer, it becomes more contained, more detailed. You start to notice how things overlap, where colour settles, where it breaks apart again. It doesn’t lock you into one way of seeing it, which is part of what keeps it interesting.
In a room, it has that same effect. It draws the eye outward rather than pulling everything in, giving a sense of depth without feeling heavy. It works well in spaces where you want that bit of openness, somewhere the piece can breathe.
It’s less about having a fixed meaning and more about that feeling of looking out into something unknown.
‘That quiet sense of scale, and the space it gives your mind to wander’.
