You can’t really beat a good walk.

We’re blessed here, living close to the Brecon Beacons. There’s one route my wife and I keep going back to that leads to Henrhyd Falls, the tallest waterfall in South Wales. You can actually step behind it, stand there with the water crashing down in front of you, and feel the full force of it moving past.

It’s never quite the same twice.

The water is constant, but everything around it shifts. Light changes, spray hangs in the air, sound deepens and bounces back off the rock. The whole thing feels alive, like it’s constantly adjusting itself even though the source doesn’t change.

That’s what stayed with me.

Not the exact image of it, but the sensation. The way the water breaks apart as it falls, hits the rock, scatters, then reforms again. There’s a rhythm to it, but it’s not neat or predictable.

This piece came from looking back at that, particularly how the water interacts with the surface beneath it. The moss, the rock, the way everything holds traces of movement even when it’s still.

The painting was built in a similar way, through movement rather than planning. Layers were added, pushed, disrupted, then built up again. There’s a bit of that Pollock influence in there, letting the paint move more freely so it feels closer to the energy of the subject rather than a fixed image.

The darker tones give it a base, something solid to sit against, while the greens and whites cut through like water catching the light mid-fall.

From a distance, it feels quite calm and expansive.

The closer you get, the more the surface starts to open up, layers, splashes, small details that keep the eye moving. It doesn’t settle in one place, which is part of what gives it that sense of flow.

In a room, it brings that same feeling with it. There’s movement there, but it’s not overwhelming. It tends to open a space up slightly, give it a bit more depth, while still feeling grounded.

It’s one of those pieces you come back to.

Each time, you notice something slightly different, a shift in light, a detail you hadn’t picked up before, much like standing in front of the falls themselves.

‘The energy of water, captured in motion’.
