Some paintings have unexpected origins.

This one was no different — it grew out of a by-product of the process itself… something I call “crunk.”

What’s ‘crunk’ I hear you ask?

To me, crunk is that dried crusty, gunky, hardened buildup of paint that accumulates around the cap and threads of a paint tube that every artist knows about. I normally throw these away, but started storing them in a jar, thinking to myself…

‘These will come in handy one day’.

Artists never throw anything away, just in case it can be re-purposed or included as a unique feature in an artwork further down the line.

So that day came.

I decided to use the contents of that jar that had been gathering dust, as a feature in the creative process of a new artwork. It added a completely different kind of texture - this was a first for me!

That changed how the piece developed and it influenced the rest of the painting. It stopped being just about what you see and became more about how it’s built. Layers started to matter more, not just visually but physically.

The composition found its own balance over time. There’s a lot going on, bold colour, sweeping marks, moments where things collide, but it never tips too far in one direction. Reds, blues, yellows and touches of gold push against each other, while lines and shapes pull things back just enough to keep it held together.

It feels energetic, but not out of control.

The eye moves around it quite naturally, picking up different areas as it goes. Some parts feel more immediate, others sit back a bit, and that contrast is what keeps it engaging.

In a space, it brings that same sense of energy with it. It lifts things, adds movement, stops a room from feeling too static, but it doesn’t overwhelm. There’s enough structure there to keep it grounded.

And that’s really what it comes down to, letting go of the need to plan everything, and trusting that something will come together if you give it enough freedom.
