Distant Drums

I wouldn’t say I’m especially musical, but I’ve always had a soft spot for jazz.
One of my favourite pieces is ’Take Five’ by Dave Brubeck.
There’s something about that drum pattern. It’s steady, but it never feels predictable. Structured, but still loose. That stayed with me, and at some point it started to translate into how I was thinking about this piece.
I wasn’t trying to paint music directly. It was more about how rhythm might show itself visually. Circles started to feel like beats, dots like accents, and the lines began to move in a way that felt more like improvisation than planning. The painting developed gradually from there, somewhere between instinct and structure.
You can feel that balance in it.
The almost-circular forms carry a kind of presence, like pulses moving through the surface, while the grids and repeated marks introduce a sense of tempo. Then there are moments where that order breaks slightly, sweeping gestures that cut across and loosen things up, stopping it from becoming too controlled.
Everything holds together, but not rigidly.
As you spend time with it, the eye moves around naturally, picking up different relationships between the elements. Some areas feel more active, others settle back, and that shift keeps it engaging without overwhelming the space.
In a room, it brings energy without noise. It doesn’t demand attention, but it doesn’t fade away either. It sits somewhere in that middle ground, where it keeps drawing you back without feeling heavy.
It has a presence that builds over time.
That’s really what connects it back to the original idea, rhythm that isn’t forced, but felt. Something steady, slightly unpredictable, and always moving just beneath the surface.
‘A rhythm you don’t hear - you feel’.
