Although I’m a ‘dyed in the wool’ Welshman, I also recognise my Celtic heritage… especially that of my Scottish ‘cousins’. There’s nothing that stirs the soul more than the haunting sound of the bagpipes - I love them!

How about you?

That age-old Scottish tradition - Burns’ Night- has long been a fixture in our house, but another ritual that stuck with us, is watching ‘Up Helly Aa’ each year - the ritual burning of a viking longship.

The procession, the torches, the longship set alight, it’s dramatic, but there’s something deeper in it too. It feels ancient. Symbolic. Like something that’s been repeated for generations.

That atmosphere stayed with me more than the spectacle.

This painting came out of that. Not as a direct image of the event, but more as a response to what it feels like, the movement of fire through darkness, the way light shifts and disappears, the sense of energy that’s there one moment and gone the next.

The palette follows that memory. Earthy browns, glowing ochres, touches of white that cut through like sparks drifting upward. It’s less about bright flame and more about what remains once it settles.

There’s a balance in it between movement and stillness.

Up close, you start to notice more going on, small shifts in colour, textures that catch the light differently, areas that feel heavier or more open. From further back, it pulls together into something more atmospheric, almost like a moment held in suspension.

In a space, it brings warmth without being bright. It has a quieter presence, something that sits in the background but still carries weight. The longer you spend with it, the more it seems to reveal itself in small ways rather than all at once.

It’s really about that afterglow.

What remains once the fire has burned through, the memory of it, rather than the event itself.

‘Fire, memory, and the echo of ritual’.
