We’re fortunate to have countless forest walks near where we live. Many of them are lined with fir trees that stay green all year, steady and familiar. There’s no better time to explore them than just after fresh snowfall, when snow clings to the heavy branches and the landscape feels briefly transformed. This was my inspiration behind ‘Fir Brrr!’.
That moment is what stayed with me while making this painting. The contrast between dark trunks and snow-laden limbs. The way white settles unevenly, catching on bark, slipping away in places, accumulating in others. It’s not tidy. It’s not symmetrical. And that’s exactly where its beauty lives.
The surface was built through instinctive, physical mark-making - dragging, scraping, and layering paint until it carried the weight of that experience. Black and deep charcoal anchor the composition like tree trunks, while whites cut and sweep across the canvas, echoing snow caught mid-fall or shaken loose by a passing breeze. Beneath it all, a muted, earthy ground warms the piece, preventing the cold from feeling distant or severe.
On the wall, Fir, Brrr! brings a quiet, grounding presence. It feels calm without being still - alive with movement, but never restless. From across the room, the contrast feels bold and confident. Up close, the textures reveal nuance, gesture, and the artist’s hand at work.
