This piece really began with a simple observation about opposites.
The world is full of opposites, especially when applied to art: light and dark, warm and cool, order and chaos - the list goes on and on. That quiet balance between extremes fascinates me as an artist, and I started wondering how those contrasts might live together inside a painting without one overpowering the other.
That curiosity eventually morphed into ‘Fire & Ice’ .
At first the idea sat on a single canvas, but it quickly felt too contained. I felt the composition needed space to breathe, so the painting gradually expanded into four panels. Breaking it apart changed the rhythm of the work. Instead of one image, the piece became a sequence, four connected moments that only really come alive when they’re experienced together.
The gaps between the panels matter as much as the paint itself. Your eye moves across them naturally, connecting colours and gestures as the composition unfolds.
Hot reds, oranges and yellows surge through parts of the painting like bursts of energy, then recede into cooler passages of blue, green and violet. Rather than forcing hard divisions, I allowed the colours to soften into one another so the transitions feel fluid and alive.
Nothing is perfectly controlled.
If you stand close to the surface, you begin to notice subtle variations — areas where paint has layered, catching light differently as the day changes. From across the room the work reads as one continuous movement; up close it becomes a series of quieter discoveries.
Because the painting is divided into four panels, it subtly stretches the space around it. The warmer tones bring energy into the room, while the cooler colours provide balance, allowing the composition to shift gently with light and mood.
