Nature has always been one of the influences on what I do, especially when it comes to colour. You can’t really compete with it, the combinations, the intensity, the way everything feels slightly unpredictable but still somehow works.
This piece came from a visit to the National Botanic Garden of Wales in Carmarthen - just over an hour’s drive from the studio - my wife and I always call in when we get the chance.
On one of those visits, we were walking through the grounds and came across a plant with these vivid pink petals and deep green leaves. I don’t remember what it was called, but I remember how it felt, it just stood out. It had that kind of presence where you stop without thinking and take a closer look. I ended up photographing it, and even looking back at the images later, the colour still held up.
That was enough.
I didn’t want to paint the plant itself. It was more about capturing that sense of intensity and abundance, the way everything felt layered and alive rather than fixed.
The painting built up quite freely. Pinks, whites, greens, deeper teal tones all working into each other, sometimes sitting comfortably, sometimes pushing against one another. There’s no single point where your eye is meant to land. It’s more about being drawn into the whole surface.
You move through it rather than across it.
Some marks are broader and more gestural, others tighter and more detailed, and that mix gives it a kind of rhythm. The splashes and drips keep it from feeling too controlled, while the density of colour gives it weight.
From a distance, it hits as bold and energetic. The closer you get, the more layers start to show themselves, small interactions between colours, areas where things have been built up or pulled back slightly.
In a space, it brings that same sense of life with it. It doesn’t sit quietly in the background. It lifts the room, adds colour, movement, a bit of unpredictability. It works particularly well where there’s space for it to breathe, somewhere it can really open up.
It’s less about representing something and more about capturing that feeling of being surrounded by it.
That sense of nature at its most vibrant, where everything feels alive at once.
‘A celebration of nature’s wild abundance, alive with colour and energy — on a grand scale’.
