It's Hip To Be Square!

I remember standing in front of this large blank canvas, not really knowing where to start.
It was one of those moments where nothing quite lands, and you’re just waiting for something to click. Then I glanced over to where I keep my paints, and all these colours - pinks, blues, yellows, greens, reds — just jumped out at me. It wasn’t subtle. It was immediate - I knew I wanted to do something with them.
That’s how this began. Not with a plan, but with colour leading the way. The surface built up piece by piece, each block of colour found its place in relation to the next, and gradually it started to take on a rhythm of its own.
What looked simple at first started to shift.
Standing in front of it, especially at this scale, there’s a sense that it isn’t completely still. The colours seem to push against each other, creating movement across the surface. It has that mosaic or kaleidoscopic feel, where everything is connected but never quite settles. But I felt that it needed something extra.
Enter the spiral in the lower corner.
It pulls things together in a different way. While the rest of the painting spreads outward, that section draws you in, giving the eye somewhere to land before sending it back out again. It creates a balance between expansion and focus, which keeps the whole piece from feeling random. The longer you stay with it, the more it changes.
From a distance, it feels bold and full of energy. As you get closer, you start to notice how the colours interact, where they sit comfortably, where they clash slightly, where the rhythm tightens or loosens. It becomes less about individual squares and more about how everything works together.
In a space, it doesn’t sit quietly.
It brings energy with it, lifts the room, gives it a sense of movement that’s hard to ignore. It suits somewhere with a bit of space around it, where it can breathe and do what it does without feeling crowded.
It’s one of those pieces you don’t just glance at.
You spend time with it.
And the more you do, the more it gives back.
