This one goes back to a family trip to Rome.
Everywhere you looked, there was marble - underfoot, towering above you, carved into fountains, lining piazzas, running through cathedrals. It wasn’t just decorative, it felt built into everything. Solid, permanent, and somehow still full of detail the longer you looked at it.
That’s what caught my attention.
It wasn’t just the scale or the history, it was the surface itself. The veins, the shifts in tone, the way no two sections ever looked quite the same. There was a kind of movement within something that’s supposed to be completely still.
That stayed with me.
Back in the studio, it became less about recreating marble and more about responding to it. Letting the paint behave in a similar way, flowing, settling, breaking apart, then coming back together again. Layers of browns, creams, blacks and siennas built up gradually, with the surface developing its own sense of depth over time.
It started to feel almost geological.
At this scale, it takes on more of a presence. It doesn’t read like a small surface, it sits more like something structural, almost as if it belongs to the space rather than just hanging in it.
There’s a weight to it, but also detail.
The gold leaf was added quite sparingly, just small accents, but enough to catch the light as you move past it. It doesn’t dominate, but it shifts the surface slightly, giving it a subtle warmth and a nod to that sense of craftsmanship you see in the buildings over there.
From a distance, it feels bold and grounded. As you get closer, more begins to reveal itself, veins, layers, areas where colour has moved and settled in ways that feel natural rather than placed.
It holds your attention without forcing it.
In a space, it tends to become part of the room rather than sitting on top of it. It has that same quality marble does, something solid, something that feels like it belongs.
‘A monumental canvas that transforms paint into stone, laced with accents of gold’.
