This one came from a trip to Iceland, where we had the chance to visit an active volcano. Standing there, you’re very aware that the ground beneath you isn’t fixed in the way you expect. Everything feels alive, heat, colour, movement, all working together in a way that’s both unsettling and strangely captivating.
It’s hard to describe, but it stays with you.
What struck me wasn’t just the spectacle, but the balance within it. There’s intensity, of course, but also moments of stillness. Areas where everything seems to pause before shifting again. That tension between movement and calm is what found its way into this piece.
‘Molten’ is not a literal take on what I saw, more a response to how it felt. The way energy builds, releases, then settles. The sweeping white marks hint at those flashes of movement, while the darker, earthier tones give it weight, something solid beneath everything that’s happening above.
The process followed that same idea. It wasn’t tightly controlled. Paint was allowed to move, spread, react, with layers building up in a way that felt closer to something natural than something constructed. Some areas were pushed, others left to settle on their own.
That balance between intention and letting go is what holds it together.
The palette keeps it grounded, earthy browns, charcoals, mineral tones, with those sharper whites cutting through like heat or light breaking across the surface. There’s a rhythm to it, but it’s not predictable.
From a distance, it reads as something strong and atmospheric. As you move closer, the surface starts to open up, textures, layers, small shifts that give it more depth than it first suggests.
In a space, it brings a certain presence with it.
There’s weight there, but also movement. It doesn’t overwhelm, but it doesn’t disappear either. It sits somewhere in between, holding attention without forcing it, and the longer you spend with it, the more it reveals.
It’s really about that moment where everything is active, but somehow balanced.
