With this one, I made a conscious decision to step back a bit and let the paint take more of the lead. Instead of controlling every mark, I allowed it to move, tilting the surface, letting it flow, settle, and find its own way across the canvas.
There wasn’t an image in mind at the start, just a bit of curiosity about what might happen if I didn’t interfere too much.
When it dried, something unexpected started to show itself.
Within all that movement, a soft, rose-like form began to appear. Not clearly defined, nothing literal, but enough to recognise if you took a step back. It wasn’t something I’d planned or tried to create, it just emerged out of the layers, and that moment of recognition is what gave the piece its name.
The colour carries that same sense of lightness. Blues and greens move through it quite naturally, almost like water or foliage, while the warmer yellows and touches of gold bring a bit of lift. There’s space in the composition as well, areas where things are allowed to breathe rather than being filled.
As you spend more time with it, you start to notice how those layers sit together, where the paint has moved freely, where it’s pooled slightly, where colours overlap and soften into each other. The texture isn’t heavy, but it’s there enough to reflect the way the piece was built.
In a room, it brings a different kind of energy.
It’s calm, but not flat. There’s a sense of movement running through it, just enough to keep it engaging without becoming too busy. The eye moves across it quite easily, picking up different areas without being pulled in one direction.
