This one came out of experimentation rather than any clear plan.
I was playing around with masking tape, but not in the usual way. Instead of using it to keep things precise, I used it to introduce a bit of order that I could later break apart. Clean lines went down first, giving the surface a structure to work against, and then everything else started to push back against that.
That’s where it began to get interesting. I felt it needed something, but I didn’t know what. The ‘splash’ across the width of the piece was the result, risky - but I think it works.
It sits somewhere between control and release.
The composition holds together through that tension. The geometry gives it a framework, but the movement across the surface stops it from feeling fixed. Some areas feel deliberate, others more instinctive, and that contrast is what gives it its energy.
There’s a small detail that shifts things slightly.
Down in the bottom-right corner, there’s a white square that anchors everything. It’s made using crushed eggshells mixed into the paint, so it has a completely different texture to the rest of the surface. It’s subtle at first, but once you notice it, it changes how you read the painting. It acts almost like a pause, something still against everything else that’s moving.
Light plays across it quite differently as well, picking up on the roughness and casting small shadows that change throughout the day.
From a distance, the piece feels sharp and structured. As you get closer, the surface opens up, layers, marks, small variations that soften that initial clarity and keep it from feeling too controlled.
In a space, it brings focus without becoming overpowering. The geometry gives it confidence, while the looser elements keep it engaging. It has momentum, but there are also quieter moments within it, which makes it something you come back to rather than just pass by.
That balance is what holds it together.
